Ólafur Arnalds releases new film ‘When We Are Born’ directed by visionary film maker Vincent Moon
Mercury Studios, Petites Planètes and Akkeri films are proud to announce the release of visionary filmmaker Vincent Moon’s unique live performance film, WHEN WE ARE BORN, in collaboration with Icelandic ground-breaking composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds. The film is available now on demand (Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes/Apple TV) and its soundtrack – containing new single ‘Saudade’, alongside songs with similar resonance from Arnalds’ recent album, ‘some kind of peace’ – will be released on July 9th.
‘When We Are Born’ is a unique live performance film telling a thoroughly human story (based in part on Ólafur’s life). Filmed on location in Iceland in summer 2020, it features the contributions of an unparalleled creative collective. The piece was directed by Vincent Moon, an independent French filmmaker known for his unique style of capturing live performance – Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, R.E.M and The National – and his intimate documentaries. It also features work from the innovative choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir, the Iceland Dance Company, and cinematographer Thor Eliasson.
The music builds upon Ólafur’s critically praised new album ‘some kind of peace’ and was performed and recorded live on set, with the location of performers in a scene impacting their sound in realistic ways; representing a constant cinematic conversation between picture and music. Vincent Moon’s intimate cinematic vision brings this layered metaphorical world alive as we see Ólafur’s emotions manifested and symbolised all around him through set design, lighting and dance.
Through themes of rituals, relationships and exploration of our inner landscapes, this is a film focused on how we all move forward — a theme made especially potent in the times of disconnect and isolation it emerged from.
