The film has been qualified to be considered for a 2022 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short and will receive a September 17th theatrical release
LEYLAK was directed by Scott Aharoni and Dennis Latos and was filmed during the height of the pandemic. This topical film features a story about an immigrant gravedigger, a frontline worker, whose close relationship with his young daughter arrives at a perilous and traumatic moment that will alter their lives forever. After world premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival and winning the Special Jury Prize, this live action short film has been blazing through the film festival circuit. And, in only two months, it has been selected by over twenty five high profile film festivals, winning multiple awards along the way. It will now receive its theatrical release in Los Angeles this September.
In present day Queens, New York, a Turkish gravedigger is unable to face a shattering truth, and risks losing the dearest connection left in his life.
Scott Aharoni & Dennis Latos are a directing duo based out of New York. They have produced a diversified slate of ad campaigns for international brands and have produced several award winning films that have garnered international success under their production company, DUO Entertainment.
The story was written and co-produced by Mustafa Kaymak, the award-winning writer and producer of Green, the winner of the 2019 short film U.S. Jury Award at Sundance Film Festival.
The stunning cinematography was created by Laura Valladao, who was also the DP for the Oscar nominated film My Nephew Emmett. Leylak features Nadir Saribacak as Yusuf who is known from Winter’s Sleep, winner of the 2014 Palme d’Or and Sarmasik, which was a 2015 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Dramatic Competition nominee. This is his first movie in the USA.
LEYLAK world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Prize. Leylak also won the Best International Short Film award at Galway Film Fleadh, the Flickers’ Jury Award, Grand Prize at Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Best International Actor award at Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, the Director’s Choice Award at the Woods Hole Film Festival and the Kathryn Tucker Windham Storyteller Award at Sidewalk Film Festival.
This timely and heartfelt film can soon be seen at the SCAD Savanna Film festival from 23rd – 30th October, Norwich Film festival 12th – 21st November and Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival 4th – 21st November.
